Office LTSC 2021 support, Windows 10 ESU Year 1 and Windows Server 2012/R2 ESU all end October 13, 2026. EPC Group’s three-week plan sorts every device first
HOUSTON, TX, UNITED STATES, October 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — EPC Group, a Houston-based Microsoft consulting firm founded in 1997, today published a three-week triage plan for organizations facing what the firm calls a triple Microsoft deadline on October 13, 2026: Office LTSC 2021 reaches end of support, the first year of Windows 10 Extended Security Updates expires, and the third and final year of Extended Security Updates for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 ends — all on the same day.
The plan sorts every affected device into one of four paths before any license or ESU purchase is made.

Three deadlines, one date — from Microsoft’s own lifecycle records
Office LTSC 2021 reaches end of support on October 13, 2026. Microsoft states: “After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security updates for this product.” Microsoft’s recommended path is Microsoft 365 Apps, with Office LTSC 2024 as the on-premises alternative for organizations not ready to move to the cloud. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Organizations that bought the first year of Extended Security Updates are covered through October 13, 2026; Year 2 coverage runs from October 14, 2026 to October 12, 2027. Microsoft’s published commercial price was $61 per device for Year One, and Microsoft states the price doubles every consecutive year for a maximum of three years.
Devices must be running Windows 10, version 22H2, to receive ESU. Windows 10 virtual machines in Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Azure Virtual Machines and the other Azure-hosted services Microsoft lists receive ESU at no additional cost.

Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 reached end of extended support on October 10, 2023. Microsoft’s lifecycle table shows the third and final year of ESU for those servers ending October 13, 2026, with no further ESU year listed. “The three programs are run by three different owners in most organizations, with three spreadsheets and three budgets,” said Errin O’Connor, Founder and Chief AI Architect of EPC Group. “The exposure sits where the spreadsheets overlap: a Windows 10 PC running Office LTSC 2021 that talks to a Windows Server 2012 file server. On October 14 that chain is unsupported at every link, and no endpoint tool makes that defensible to an auditor, a cyber-insurer or a CMMC assessor.”
The three-week triage plan
Week one — count before you buy. Export the device inventory from Intune, Configuration Manager or the directory; tag every device with its Windows version and build, its Office version and channel, and the servers it depends on. The overlap set — Windows 10 devices running Office LTSC 2021 — is the priority list. Organizations that skip this step buy ESU for devices they are about to retire and miss devices that cannot enroll because they are not on version 22H2.
Week two — assign every device to one of four paths.
– Path A: move the user to Microsoft 365 Apps on a supported Windows 11 device (Microsoft’s primary recommendation for enterprises is Microsoft 365 E3, with Office 365 E3 or Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise where only the applications are needed).
– Path B: Office LTSC 2024 for devices that must stay on-premises.
– Path C: Windows 10 ESU Year 2 as a twelve-month bridge for devices that cannot move before October 13 — purchased only for the counted quantity, and only after confirming version 22H2.
– Path D: retire or replace. For Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 workloads the choice is narrower: migrate to a supported Windows Server version, move the workload to Azure, or decommission; after October 13 there is no ESU to buy.
Week three — execute in deadline order. Enroll the Path C devices and verify ESU activation; complete the Path A upgrades for the overlap set first; schedule Path B installations; and record the decision for every device so the finance and security owners are reading the same list. EPC Group’s plan includes the checklist for each path and the questions an assessor will ask about the devices that remain on a bridge.
Where EPC Group fits
EPC Group has delivered 216-plus merger-and-acquisition tenant migrations covering 1.83 million users and more than 11,000 enterprise engagements since 1997, figures the firm reports from its own records. Its Microsoft 365 License Optimization Assessment produces the device-by-device path map and the Microsoft 365 E3, Apps for enterprise and E7 arithmetic in the first week, so the October order is sized from an inventory rather than a guess.
The firm’s Microsoft 365 consulting practice carries the Path A and Path C deployments from there. Details: https://www.epcgroup.net/services/microsoft-365-license-optimization-assessment and https://www.epcgroup.net/services/microsoft-365-consulting
Four questions organizations are asking this week
Does Office LTSC 2021 stop working on October 13, 2026?
No. The applications keep running. Microsoft stops providing security updates, bug fixes and technical support, which is what auditors, insurers and regulators evaluate. EPC Group’s plan treats an unsupported Office suite on an unsupported operating system as the first population to move.
Can Windows 10 ESU Year 2 be bought without Year 1?
Microsoft’s program is cumulative: an organization that skipped Year 1 pays for it before Year 2 activates. EPC Group’s week-one inventory exists so that purchase is made for the counted quantity only.
What happens to Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 after October 13, 2026?
Microsoft’s lifecycle table lists the end of the third ESU year on that date with no further year. EPC Group’s plan routes those workloads to a supported Windows Server version, to Azure, or to decommissioning.
Is a device that cannot reach version 22H2 eligible for ESU?
No. Microsoft requires Windows 10, version 22H2, for ESU enrollment. EPC Group’s inventory step flags those devices for Path A or Path D before any ESU is ordered.
